“Do you think she’d give up?”

“No, Liam. She was keen on trying to change you long before she told you that. It isn’t just a popping and passing thought.”

“Why can’t she just accept who I am, where I’m coming from? It’s so much easier than pushing me to change everything.”

“She’s scared of this, of who you are, and where you come from.”

He frowned. “I’m her mate. I would never hurt her… not intentionally.”

Grace smiled sadly. “Don’t you think it might not be herself she’s worried about? She could fear for other people. You said she told you about not wanting to raise children in this pack. She might be scared for the pups. It really shouldn’t be that hard to understand her. She’s not a Rubik’s cube.”

Liam leaned back in his seat and arms crossed over his chest. “You talked to her. Ever since, she’s been pushing me in every direction I won’t go.”

“Do not blame me here, Liam. I just told her how I couldn’t change your father and eventually, gave in to him because that’s the truth. Whatever ideas she got after that, they were all her own.”

“She’s not asking me what I want.”

“Then just tell her without her asking it. Goodness, you’re as stubborn as she is. No wonder you can’t make a mind up. At some point, you are both going to have to cave, but if either of you want your relationship to work, one needs to give up more than the other. How long before that someone figures it out?”

Liam glared at her. “Do not push me into giving in here. I’m the…” He stopped himself before continuing. Kathryn was right when she said they were equal, but he didn’t have the guts to admit that. At least, he didn’t when she was still in his study.

“The Alpha?” Liam immediately shook his head as it brought back his conversation with Kathryn.

“No, her mate and equal. I already made the mistake of pushing my Alpha title on her,” he said with a resentful sigh. His eyebrows furrowed as he stared at the table, and the corners of his mouth turned down although they hadn’t turned upwards since the talk with Kathryn. Grace stared at her son with worry and pulled her chair opposite of him closer to the desk.

And then suddenly with panic, Liam looked up at her. “Mom.” Her chest warmed at it. He had only called her “mother” for years, and it always sounded so formal, but this was her son, and he was looking for a mother’s comfort. “I don’t know what to do. I want to give her the world she wants, but I don’t know how. There are so many ‘ifs’ and ‘buts,’ and I don’t yet know how to say no to my father.”

“Liam, I think what you’re really worried about is exactly how you’re going to fend off an angry ex-Alpha when you do decide to do something. Do you want me to give you a suggestion?” Liam
